January 16th, 2018 NBA Betting Tips

GraemeWritten by Graeme

The big game yesterday saw the Warriors run out 118-108 winners as they beat the Cavaliers in Cleveland.

That was a hell of a game and how about Curry with the dunk! The game fizzled out at the end unfortunately but it was a good one up until that.

We had Warriors -5.5 in that one and so won our bet there. Hope you all got on that one. Unfortunately the other two teams let us down which were the Spurs and the Pistons.

We move onto tonight, January 16th 2018. Quick note for anyone who likes to bet golf that my golf betting tips have returned for the 2018 year. We even had a small cash in the Sony Open to kickstart things so that was nice.

Alright only 4 games tonight.

Celtics vs Pelicans Betting Tips:

The Celtics are on another winning streak and are coming off a good little break so they should be refreshed and ready to put up 100+ points in this one.

That’s exactly what they will need against a team like the Pelicans. While the Pelicans are a solid road team they shouldn’t cause many problems to the Celtics here.

I think the Celtics might start a bit slow but will pick up as things go on and end up dominating down the stretch putting this game beyond reach there.

The Celtics have won 3 in a row against the Pelicans at home and I expect 4 in a row and for them to cover the spread tonight.

That’s the only pick today which is Celtics -4.5.

A 2-0 record last night, the second one of those in a row.

Yesterday’s tips were quite easy actually, no sweating involved. We had the Heat -1.5 over the Bucks and they won by 18. The Bucks looked sloppy and shot poorly from the field, almost like they live in freezing Wisconsin and had a chance to spend a Saturday night in Miami. A shame that basketball game got in the way of a great weekend.

We also had the Timberwolves -6 and they won by 17 over the Blazers. They really flexed their offensive muscles in this one, scoring 120 behind a 20/11 game from Karl-Anthony Towns.

Today is Martin Luther King Day in the US so we have quite a few day games in the NBA. Let’s take a look at some of our favorites.

Charlotte Hornets vs. Detroit Pistons Betting Tips:

I am thinking this early start has to favor the home team. This game starts at 12:05 Eastern time and that is terribly early for NBA players who train their bodies to peak around 7:00 Eastern Time. Not only that, but their is a huge home/road disparity in this one. The Hornets have a terrible 5-13 record away from home this year while the Pistons are 13-5. Sometimes it’s just that easy.

As long as Andre Drummond is active for this one, we are taking the Pistons. If he ends up not playing, skip it. I think he will play and I think the Pistons -3 will roll.

San Antonio Spurs vs. Atlanta Hawks Betting Tips:

It’s looking like the starting lineup will be intact for this one and if that’s the case, that is big trouble for the Atlanta Hawks. They simply don’t have the manpower to keep up with the Spurs machine. Historically, San Antonio owns Atlanta with a 27-12 record against the spread since 1996. We don’t expect that to go any differently today in Atlanta and the Spurs -7.5 are our pick.

Golden State Warriors vs. Cleveland Cavaliers Betting Tips:

The game that everyone has been waiting for since Christmas.

This one should be interesting as the Cavaliers have lost four of five and looked a bit lost as of late. While the Warriors just got Curry back and have won 7 of their last 8, including a dominating win over the Toronto Raptors. The Warriors have disappointed at times and are not going to win 70 games this year, but they are still really amazing when they want to be and tonight against the Cavs on national TV definitely seems like a game they would want to be.

Forget all the narratives and storylines though, let’s look at the stats. The Warriors are ranked number one in Offensive Rating meaning they have the very best offense in the league. While the Cavs rank 29th in Defensive Rating, the second worst in the league. Put it this way, if this was Warriors vs. Suns would you even hesitate to bet? Not at this line.

The Warriors -5.5 is a gift and the Cleveland offense is going to have some serious trouble this evening. LeBron doesn’t like being embarrassed on national TV, but there is a pretty damn good chance that he’s going to be tonight. You have to play defense. Sorry.

A nice 2-0 record last night.

At halftime of the Raptors and Warriors game we felt like absolute fools. We picked the Raptors +5.5 and the score was 81-54 Warriors at the half. This is one of those games you look at the score and just laugh. Then the second half happened. The Raptors put up an absolutely amazing comeback and had the ball in their hands with the chance to tie or take the lead late in the fourth. They ran out of steam, but they definitely grabbed the Warriors attention. Even better, they covered and grabbed us a win.

Our other tip was the Spurs -7 against a tired Nuggets team and this one was never really in doubt. The Spurs ended up winning 112-80 in an easy win. The Nuggets made a game of it in the third quarter as they outscored the Spurs by 11, but then the fourth happened and the Spurs erupted for a 39-18 final frame and a dominating win.

Milwaukee Bucks vs. Miami Heat Betting Tips:

I do not like this game for the Bucks. First of all, it’s a Sunday home game for the Heat. That means that the Bucks spent Saturday night in Miami, one of the best party cities in the world. I’m not saying they went out and partied last night, but the odds are there and we know that teams will lose games during the regular season due to partying the night before. This is a worse case scenario if that’s the case for the Bucks as this one starts at 1:05 local time.

Forget about all that though as the Heat are hot right now. They’ve won six straight while the Bucks have played some real uneven basketball as of late. The Bucks defense has been really unimpressive this season and the Heat are a team that can take advantage of something like that. They are a really well coached team that is playing great ball right now. The Heat -1 should probably be giving more in this, so we are all over it.

Portland Trailblazers vs. Minnesota Timberwolves Betting Tips:

This is the fifth and final game of a home stand for the Timberwolves. This run has been really successful as they’ve won the first four games and covered the spread in each one. They draw a great match-up here against the Blazers. Portland is on the fourth game of a road trip that hasn’t been going great for them.

Minnesota has been one of the top offenses in basketball this season, fourth in Offensive Rating on the season, and it’s hard not to like them against this Blazers team. They haven’t been scoring very well and while their defense has been better than expected, I don’t see them stopping the Wolves here. The Blazers are just 7-14 this year against teams with a winning record and Minnesota is slowly proving themselves as one of the elite teams in the West.

At home against a team that has lost two straight and looking really good themselves right now, Minnesota -5.5 is a great play tonight.

A rough 0-3 night last night.

We loved the Wizards -10 against the Magic and while they won easily, it wasn’t easy enough based on that monster line. The Wizards scored 31 or more in the first three quarters, but only managed 27 in the fourth. Those four less points ended up costing us.

The Hawks -2.5 looked good at home against the Nets, but sometimes the better team is just the better team. The Hawks aren’t great.

The same can be said about the Suns +7.5 pick against the Rockets. We expected them to hang with them and score some big points, but that just didn’t happen. The Rockets defense, sorry we underrated you.

Let’s forget yesterday and move on to today.

Golden State Warriors vs. Toronto Raptors Betting Tips:

The Warriors have not been shy about resting players this year and tonight should be one where they do so. Why? Because they are in schedule hell right now. They are on their third game in four nights and the second half of a back-to-back. The first game was in Oakland, then last night in Milwaukee and tonight in Toronto. That’s four different time zones. They probably got in pretty late last night and will start this game less than 24 hours after getting to the hotel in Toronto. This is a rough one. On top of all that, Steph Curry is still listed as questionable.

Toronto has a one day rest advantage and will be at home for this one. They have one of the best home records in the NBA and are probably excited to see how they fare against the Warriors tonight. They’ve made big changes to their offense with the Finals in mind so this will be a good test for them.

It’s hard not to like the Raptors +4 getting points at home against a tired Warriors team. They may be without Kyle Lowry, but as we saw against the Cavs earlier this week that isn’t as big of a problem for them as you might think.

Denver Nuggets vs. San Antonio Spurs Betting Tips:

The rest will strike again tonight as the Nuggets head into this one with a really rough schedule as of late. This is the fifth in eight days, third in four days and the second game of a back-to-back. Oh, and they play the Spurs who are one of the toughest teams in the NBA. Good luck.

The Spurs are 14-5 against the spread at home this year with an 18-2 record straight up. While the Nuggets are just 7-15 on the road (8-12 against the spread). The Spurs would look good here without the big rest advantage and with it they look amazing. Throw in the fact that this team got pasted by the Lakers of all teams in their last game out and we fully expect them to come out swinging at home tonight.

The Spurs -7.5 is a little high, but the factors going into this game point to the Spurs rolling over the Nuggets. The rest is rough, the home court advantage is rougher ad the Spurs should be highly motivated.

A 1-1 record last night.

The Clippers -1.5 were our favorite pick and that one came in easily. One night after scoring 50 points, Lou Williams did it again for the Clippers as he scored 30 in the victory. This team is really showing something of late and Williams is playing some of the best basketball of his career right now. Crazy.

On the other end of the spectrum, the Cavs -3 got absolutely spanked by the Raptors last night. The Raptors were without both Serge Ibaka and Kyle Lowry in this one and the team just stepped up all around them. That was a game that they probably had circled on their schedule for a long time before last night.

Orlando Magic vs. Washington Wizards Betting Tips:

The Wizards are starting to come around and get things done this season. They are 9-6 in their past 30 days with a 3.1 Net Rating. While this team still needs another piece or two to really compete in the East, they have been playing much better of late and are grabbing rebounds at a solid rate. Health has been a big factor in the success and tonight is a good chance for them to flex their muscles against the lowly Magic.

Over that same 30 day period, the Magic have an NBA worst -10.6 Net Rating. That is so bad. I hate laying this many points in the NBA, but the Magic deserve it. Wizards -10 control magic (sorry) and they should beat the Magic easily here.

Get the NBA Tips delivered to your inbox each day for free.

Brooklyn Nets vs. Atlanta Hawks Betting Tips:

The Hawks have not been great this season, but they have been much better at home. They have a 7-11 home record while going 10-8 against the spread. For most teams that wouldn’t be anything to get excited about, but when a team has just 11 wins on the season that is a reason for celebration. They have a great chance to add to their total tonight against the Nets.

While the Nets have been a tough team to beat this season with a great against the spread record, they have been worst on the road with just a 6-13 record. The home/road splits really favor the Hawks here and Atlanta -3.5 is a solid play.

Houston Rockets vs. Phoenix Suns Betting Tips:

The Rockets without James Harden have kept up pretty well. Chris Paul has shown he’s still one of the best players in the NBA and Eric Gordon has stepped up in a major way. They still have their issues when it comes to depth, but this is a good team even without James Harden

They face the Suns tonight in Phoenix and while we think the Rockets should win this one, the line is a bit too high. Phoenix has played well of late as they are coming off a big win against the Thunder and they can keep up scoring with the Rockets in a way that few teams can. It feels odd to write, but our system loves the Suns +7 at home tonight against the Rockets and we believe in the system.

Unfortunately we posted a goose egg yesterday with the NBA Tips.

I liked the Wizards to bounce back against the Jazz however the Jazz had a massive game and Wizards couldn’t even win, let alone cover the spread.

Wizards just looked like they didn’t take them seriously and thought they could stroll to success so that was a very frustrating one to see.

The other one had me stunned as we had the Nuggets -9.5 against the Hawks and Atlanta blew them away 110-97. The Hawks just didn’t give up and both opened and closed the game with extremely strong performances.

Welp.

We shall move onto Thursday, January 11th. 4 games on the board. Two streaking teams with the Celtics visiting Philly to take on the 76ers. The Raptors host the Cavs as Toronto hope to have Lowry back and to get a big W.

Sacramento Kings vs LA Clippers Betting Tips:

The 13-27 Kings come into this one on the back of a 2 game losing streak. The LA Clippers have 2 wins in a row and are currently 19-21.

Wins are crucial for the Clippers at the moment as they look to at least hit .500 and they’re coming in with high momentum after that victory over the Golden State Warriors.

These two teams last played on December 26th and the Clippers ran wild over them 122-95. I can’t help but see a repeat performance. The Clippers are juts going from strength to strength and aren’t going to underrestimate a team.

I’m taking Clippers -1.5 tonight and am expecting them to dominate.

Raptors vs LeBron Betting Tips:

The Raptors are without Lowry again and that’s going to be a big loss. They hung in there well against the Heat but the heads are going to go down knowing they’ve already lost one without him and I think they’re going to lose another.

The Cavs are going to be out for blood in this one knowing it’s a winnable game against a top team. This is an opportunity they can’t afford to blow and Lebron won’t let them.

Cavs -3.

It was a winning night last night with the NBA Tips.

We had the Blazers +8 and we didn’t even need the points. Hell we could have GIVEN those points and still won as the Blazers absolutely killed the Thunder 117-106. It was a very close game too but the Blazers worked hard and deservedly got the win.

We also had the Mavericks over the Magic. It didn’t work out as expected in that I said the Mavs would get an early lead and dominate from there. Mavs did but then lost their lead but thankfully came out strong in the 3rd with a great performance. We had Mavs -6.5 and they won by 15 points.

Raptors didn’t play Lowry last night – probably best to rest him – but they fought hard yet couldn’t get the W there.

It’s January 10th and a busy night with 11 games on the board. Lot of potential good games let’s see what we have tonight:

Wizards vs Jazz Betting Tips:

The Wizards come into this one off a loss to the Milwaukee Bucks and I like them to bounce right back.

They’ve shown in recent times that they are a strong bounce back team. They’ll be frustrated after that loss to the Bucks as they should have had that game. It was a poor performance in the 4th as well as GIANNIS~! that churt them.

Jazz had that solid game against the Heat however they’re still really struggling without Gobert and they just aren’t looking like they can recover without him.

Their road form is poor and they’re getting thumped and I like that to continue.

Wizards -7.5

Americans: Where To Bet the NBA

Sportsbook: Reason:
Bovada 50% to $250 Welcome Bonus

Nuggets vs Hawks Betting Tips:

This is one of those games the Nuggets need to take seriously. It’s a winnable game and they need to put away the Atlanta Hawks. They’re at home where you have to think they’ll stop this losing streak and take it seriously.

Hawks are a feisty team and we saw how they did against the Clippers. But the Hawks are garbage and the Nuggets should have this one with ease. I don’t think Denver will lay off just because of the opposition – they will take Atlanta seriously as they know how key the wins are here as they look to end their playoff drought.

I’m taking Nuggets -9.5 and hoping they don’t let up throughout the game.

Unfortunately those are the only two games I’ve got tonight. My system likes the Bucks but not enough to cover and really I don’t want to ever bet on a Bucks game again – 10 of our losses this season are due to either betting the Bucks or against the Bucks. Just a team we can’t figure out.
