A nice 1-0 record last night. That’s 3-0 for Graeme this week.

It was a nice pick today as the Magic hosted the Pacers. We took Orlando with the points and they showed up big in the fourth quarter to claim it. They finished that quarter 38-27 in route to the 107-100 win. The big star in this one was Terrence Ross off the bench who finished with 30 points. Nikola Vucevic and Jonathan Isaac both finished with double-doubles.

There were a couple more exciting games in the NBA last night as well. The Bucks defeated the Raptors in Toronto to make the season series 3-1. The Bucks are currently in the driver’s seat for the best record in the East, and now hold the tiebreaker as well.

We also saw the 76ers end the Warriors 11-game win streak with a huge road win. The two young stars really shone here as Joel Embiid had 26 points and 20 rebounds while Ben Simmons had 26/8/6. A good win for the Sixers and a 41-point night for Stephen Curry wasted.

Tonight’s slate is far less exciting. This might be a trend going forward as the NBA likes to have the big Thursday night games and will start doing the Saturday night games as well. That leaves Friday out in terms of big, marquee match-ups.

That said, there is always plenty to bet on in the NBA so let’s take a look at what we’ve got.

Boston Celtics vs. New York Knicks: A huge trade in the NBA went down as the Knicks traded Kristaps Porzingis, Courtney Lee and Tim Hardaway Jr. for DeAndre Jordan, Wesley Matthews, and Dennis Smith Jr. This is definitely a tanking move and a clearing of the salary cap move for the Knicks. We don’t know who will play today and how it all might fit. This line is HUGE. I would go with the Knicks as the Celtics might take them easy, but we just have no idea what we’re getting with New York in this one.

Atlanta Hawks vs. Utah Jazz: The Hawks are in the midst of a brutal schedule right now. In the middle of a seven game road trip and tonight will be the first half of a back-to-back, third in four. Utah has been playing really great basketball an the only thing that is keeping me off them is the schedule. They are also on the first half of a back-to-back, third in four. Sometimes the first half of the back-to-back can be just as tough when a team is looking forward. Plus, -11.5 is a lot. I like the Jazz a lot here, but just can’t pull the trigger.

Houston Rockets vs. Denver Nuggets Betting Tips:

As of this writing, Chris Paul is listed as questionable for tonight. They just got him back so are likely taking it slow with him. We’ve seen some amazing things from James Harden while he’s been out and that should continue here.

That said, this isn’t your usual match-up. Denver is a top-ten defensive team and they have the depth to really rattle the Rockets. With Clint Capela out, Nikola Jokic could really do some special things here and I just think the Nuggets are the better all around team right now. Throw in just how difficult it is to play on the road at Denver, 18-8 against the spread at home, I am all about the Nuggets here.

An 0-1 record last night.

We took the Wolves at home on a home-and-home with the Jazz. I figured they might come out and avenge their recent loss, but the Jazz were just too much to handle. The funny thing here is when they played at Utah on Friday, the Jazz were up big and then let the Wolves have a huge fourth quarter to make it close. In this game, it was close the whole way before the Jazz exploded in the fourth 35-26. The key here was Donovan Mitchell. He was just 2-for-12 in the first half, but he heated up in the third and finished with 29 points.

The big news in the NBA is that Anthony Davis has requested to be traded. The Lakers and Celtics are the obvious fits, but due to some weird salary cap rules they can’t trade for Davis until 7/1. You have to imagine that no one on the Lakers is untouchable outside of LeBron James. Anthony Davis is truly a once-in-a-lifetime player.

It all depends on what New Orleans is looking for. Do they want to stay somewhat competitive? Do they want to go for a youth movement? The front office hasn’t done a great job building the team around Davis so really anything can happen. With the recent trade of Paul George seeing him like his new place and re-signing before hitting free agency, I think teams will be ultra-aggressive now. Portland is my sleeper, but it’s hard to say if he’d want to go there long-term.

It’s going to be interesting watching this play out, to be sure. For now, let’s just take a look at today’s games.

Golden State Warriors vs. Indiana Pacers: This really would’ve been a great game with Victor Oladipo and I probably would’ve taken the Pacers and the points in that scenario. As it is, he’s out for the season and the Warriors should roll.

Atlanta Hawks vs. Los Angeles Clippers: The Hawks have been a much better team as the season has wore on, but they are still going nowhere. They’ve done pretty well against the spread this season, but the Clippers at home have been amazing. This line just feels a little off to me though.

Brooklyn Nets vs. Boston Celtics: I really wanted to take the Nets here, but the injury situation is not good for them right now. Spencer Dinwiddie and Joe Harris join Allen Crabbe, Caris LeVert and Jared Dudley on the injury list here and that is just too much. I think they are probably getting too many points, but with that injury situation I just can’t support them.

Denver Nuggets vs. Memphis Grizzlies Betting Tips:

The Grizzlies just ended an eight game losing streak by beating the Oladipo-less Pacers. I don’t like their chances against this really good Denver team here.

With Memphis putting their two best players on the trading block, it’s hard to see a lot of positives for this team. Denver has them beat all around. I like Nikola Jokic much better than Marc Gasol at this point and the bench depth isn’t even close here. There is a reason Memphis is in the situation they are in and that Denver is one of the top teams in the league right now.

An 0-1 record last night.

We took the Raptors -2.5 over the Rockets last night, but the Rockets just wouldn’t let that one come through. The Raptors never led in this game, but they definitely made it interesting. They got it down to 119-121 in the fourth quarter and had it set up for Kawhi Leonard to take the final shot. He missed a three-pointer and the Rockets won. Houston wouldn’t be stopped here as despite shooing just 10-for-46 from three (21.7%), they got to the rack and the line a lot. The Raptors made four more threes in this game, but when your opponent shoots 15 more free throws than you – it’s hard to compete.

Last night was one of those nights where there were some games I was leaning towards, but just couldn’t bite the bullet on and, of course, those are the ones that won.

Kind of small slate tonight with just five games on the books. Let’s take a look and see what looks good.

Indiana Pacers vs. Memphis Grizzlies: The Pacers just lost Victor Oladipo for the season and it will be interesting to see how they respond. A lot of times teams will rally around that player in the first few games before falling down to earth so I am off the Grizzlies here.

My system does see the Pacers as around a -4 favorite WITH Oladipo and this line is -4 without him. A home team getting four points with the opposing team not having their best player is awfully tempting, but I’ll be taking a wait and see approach here.

Golden State Warriors vs. Boston Celtics: The game of the night is for sure this one. Both of these teams are hot with five straight wins for Boston and nine straight wins for Golden State. I am not going against the Warriors right now, and there is just enough doubt that this one means more to Boston that I am afraid to go with them. This should be a ton of fun to watch though.

Philadelphia 76ers vs. Denver Nuggets Betting Tips:

Typically a team playing at Denver is music to my ears, but I would normally like the Sixers quite a bit here. For one, they were off yesterday so hopefully have had some time to acclimate to the conditions. Not only that, they haven’t played since the 23rd so have a nice rest advantage here. They are 7-4 straight up when have 2 days rest.

Denver played a tough road game against the Jazz last night in which they lost and head home here. You have to feel sorry for Nikola Jokic having to bang with Rudy Gobert yesterday and then Joel Embiid again tonight. That kind of thing would have to have an effect on a guy.

Except here’s the thing: Joel Embiid is listed as OUT for this one and Jimmy Butler is listed as doubtful. Despite the rest advantage, the Sixers are majorly hobbled here and Denver should bounce back with a nice win. The line is a bit higher than I’d like, but I just don’t buy the Sixers without Butler and Embiid.

Bet Nuggets -8.5

A 1-0 record last night.

We’ve been saying for some time that some luck would start going our way and that’s exactly what happened last night. The Warriors dominated the Wizards, but they were laying huge points on the road. We took the Wizards +9 and it didn’t look like it was going to happen. Then the Wiz scored the last seven points of the game and lost 126-118. A cover. I’ll take that kind of cover any day as I’ve been on the other side of it before.

A typical full slate of Friday games today with a very interesting match-up between the Houston Rockets and Toronto Raptors. Chris Paul is actually listed as questionable for this one which is an upgrade of where he’s been for the past several weeks. I doubt he’ll play, but he will be back soon.

Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Utah Jazz: I’ve said this before, but the Jazz had one of the toughest schedules to start the season and are now getting back on track. They are 8-2 over their past ten and are a huge favorite here. I think they are maybe a little too big of a favorite though as Minnesota has been playing some good ball as well. They are 7-3 over their past ten and have won three straight. This seems like a -8 game and it’s -10.5. Wolves look good, but it’s hard to go against Jazz at home right now.

Los Angeles Clippers vs. Chicago Bulls: I don’t understand the love the sportsbooks are giving the Bulls. The Clips are -5 here, but that seems low. The Bulls are on a 1-11 stretch right now. This is the fourth game of a road trip for the Clips which backs me off of going for this one, but it’s hard to imagine the Bulls beating a team like this that is better than them in every way.

Milwaukee Bucks vs. Charlotte Hornets: Will the Bucks win? I’m almost positive of this. They have been outstanding at home this season with a 21-4 record. The crowd will be feeding off Giannis Antetokounmpo being the East All-Star leading vote getter and captain, and you have to think Giannis will be feeding off them as well. It’s a pretty great time to be a Bucks fan. Will they cover the nearly twelve point spread? That I’m not so sure of.

Toronto Raptors vs. Houston Rockets Betting Tips:

This should be good. James Harden is on one of the most historic scoring runs that we’ve ever seen. He would lead the league in scoring if free throws didn’t exist. He would lead the league in scoring if three pointers didn’t exist. He is just doing it all over the court right now and it doesn’t seem like there is anyone who can stop him.

Enter Kawhi Leonard. A multi-time Defensive Player of the Year, if anyone can stop Harden it’s going to be this guy. This is why they traded for him and this is his chance to show what he can do. It’s been two weeks, but the Bucks set up a pretty interesting strategy for stopping Harden and the Raps are a team that is fully equipped to take advantage of it.

The Raptors are set up roster-wise to beat this team as they just have more depth than them. The only way the Rockets can win right now is with the James Harden show and the Raps have someone who is uniquely qualified to stop him. I am loving the Raptors here and excited to watch this showdown of superstars.

Bet Raptors -2.5

An 0-1 record last night.

I liked the Clips, but then switched the Spurs at the last minute. It’s a mortal lock whenever you do that last minute switch that your initial thought is correct. The Clips really sold out for this win as Avery Bradley, Tobias Harris, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Patrick Beverley all played over 38 minutes in this game. Based on his line for this game, I think DeMar DeRozan might’ve been better off not playing through his injury as he finished with 8 points, going 4-for-16 from the field.

Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the NBA really goes all out to celebrate this holiday with 11 games. A lot of teams are playing early games today in celebration as a lot of people are off of work today. There’s a lot to get to, so let’s dig in.

Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Chicago Bulls: I have looked at this line every which way and I can’t understand why the Bulls are a -2 favorite on the road. That said, these two teams are a combined 1-19 over their past ten games. With the Bulls having lost ten straight. Why they think the Bulls end that streak here, I don’t know. I like the Cavs, but it’s just hard to bet on teams with records like this.

Memphis Grizzlies vs. New Orleans Pelicans: The Grizz have lost five straight, but they are favored here against the Pelicans. Why? No Anthony Davis. Grizz -3.5 looks good considering that fact, but this team has just been awful of late and I’m not sure it’s worth it.

Sacramento Kings vs. Brooklyn Nets Betting Tips:

These are two of the more surprising teams in the NBA thus far this season and this is a really nice match-up. Both teams are coming in hot, having won four of their past five games. This could be one of the most fun games of the day.

I really like the Nets to protect their home court here. D’Angelo Russell is really having a breakout season and the match-up between him and De’Aaron Fox should be. The thing I like about Brooklyn is their depth as even with their injuries, they’ve continued to play their brand of basketball. This is a big home game for them and the crowd is starting to get behind this team. This line is a bit low of where I think it should be as this is a really early game for the Kings who are a California team playing a 12:30 Pacific time game.

Bet Nets -3

Miami Heat vs. Boston Celtics Betting Tips:

For whatever reason, the Heat always give Boston trouble. Over the last three seasons, Boston is 7-7 against Miami. That doesn’t sound too bad, but when you consider that Boston has been one of the best teams in the league over that span while the Heat have been fringe playoff contenders that’s been pretty huge. Earlier this month, Boston did not show up for a game in Miami and lost 115-99.

To me, this line is just too high. Miami is 13-7 against the spread as an underdog and 13-8 ATS in road games. Taking away that blowout win last time out, the last five games between these teams has been decided by six or less. Eight is a ton in this league and I’m taking the points here.

A 1-1 record last night.

The Heat line made no sense when it went up and it made no sense when the Heat beat the Bulls 117-103. Josh Richardson led the way for Miami with 26 points.

Some things, you just can’t know before a game starts. We had the Mavs +6.5 and the Pacers ended up win 111-99 to cover the spread. The thing that we couldn’t have possibly known heading in was that Luka Doncic would foul out with just 24 minutes played. He was getting abused by the Pacers defense in this one, so not saying they would’ve covered but I would’ve certainly felt better about it. They weren’t calling a lot of fouls on Doncic and he was frustrated with the refs, earning his first technical. Later in the game, he said he went to juggle the ball with his feet (you know, like Europeans do in football) and instead he was called for his second technical and kicked out of the game.

There are only three games on the schedule today as the league seems to want to avoid the NFL playoffs. I quit watching football a couple of years ago, but go Saints. New Orleans is my favorite city in the world so let’s hope those fine people get to party today. Let’s get into the games.

Phoenix Suns vs. Minnesota Timberwolves: I almost talked myself into Phoenix +12 here. They’ve won four of their past six games and have been looking more sturdy of late. I just can’t do it though. As a road underdog with spreads of 6.5 to 12, they are just 5-9 against the spread. This is the second half of a back-to-back too, from cold Charlotte to cold Minnesota, and the fourth game of a road trip. I’d rather stay away.

Charlotte Hornets vs. Indiana Pacers: Similar situation here, but I can actually make a good case for both teams. Charlotte has won three straight by 15+ points and has looked really good of late. Kemba Walker draws a nice match-up against a probable Darren Collison. While the Pacers are on a 10-3 run with their only losses being to Boston, Toronto, and Philadelphia: three of the best teams in the East. Skip it.

Los Angeles Clippers vs. San Antonio Spurs Betting Tips:

I was all set on taking the Clippers here. This line felt like an adjustment to the Spurs awesome 17-7 record against the spread at home this season. The Clippers have had a tough schedule and are a pretty solid team so I thought they were being underrated a bit. Then I took a look at the injury report.

No Lou Williams has been hurting them for awhile now, still no Luc Mbah A Moute and Danilo Gallinari was downgraded to doubtful for this one. I’d say Gallinari has been their MVP this season so that hurts quite a bit. The Clips are in the midst of a five game losing streak and I don’t see that getting any better here.

Also in the injury report, DeMar DeRozan was upgraded to probable. I just have to go with the Spurs here. They have been cooking at home all season and have been very good to us while the Clips are in a real hole right now.

Bet Spurs -8

A 1-0 record last night.

Last night, Blake Griffin showed what a superstar does. He was red hot to start the game and got his team to an early lead, then finished strong to ensure they got the win. He finished with 32 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 assists. The Pistons won 98-93, easily covering the -1.

Interesting schedule today with two teams on schedule alert games and very different spreads for them. Usually I try to target the schedule alert games, but these are just weird.

Cleveland is playing their third road game in four nights and on a road back-to-back, at Denver which is the hardest place to play on the road. Denver is an enormous -17.5 for this one. The books know the disadvantage here and the talent difference between these two teams and are making you pay for it. Sorry, but that is just too rich for my blood.

The other big schedule alert game is the Boston Celtics who are also playing their third in four nights and are on the road at Atlanta. I would almost take Atlanta +9 here based on that, but with both John Collins and Trae Young listed as questionable it’s hard to justify.

Luckily, there are plenty more games on the schedule. Let’s take a look at what we do like today.

Get the NBA Tips delivered to your inbox each day for free.

Memphis Grizzlies vs. Toronto Raptors: I couldn’t bite the bullet last night on a game where I thought Memphis was getting too much and they ended up covering it. I can’t do it here either. +12 is a lot for this team, but on a back-to-back at Boston and Toronto is about as tough as it gets. Just staying away.

Sacramento Kings vs. Detroit Pistons: The Pistons are getting +2.5 at home here which is very tempting. My only thing here is last time they played the Kings, Sacramento wiped the floor with them. That said, Griffin was out for that one. Well, Andre Drummond is out for this one.. Not sure how much that helps/hurts them considering Willie-Cauley Stein dominated him last time out. Leaning Pistons, but just not strong enough.

Dallas Mavericks vs. Indiana Pacers Betting Tips:

I honestly think these are two pretty similar teams with the main difference being that one plays in a really hard conference. A lot of their raw stats are similar as the Pacers shoot threes a little better and the Mavs defend them a little better. This feels like a pretty even match-up to me.

A lot has been said (by me) about the Mavs home/road splits. They’ve turned that back around a bit of late, but where they have really shined is keeping these games close. They have a 10-8 against the spread record as a road underdog and that number is 18-9 as an underdog straight up. This team will surprise you and Luka Doncic is as dangerous as they come.

Indiana has been tough and are 15-6 straight up at home this year. Covering the spread has been a different story. I think this line is about 2-3 points too high and the Mavs should keep it close.

Bet Mavericks +6.5

Miami Heat vs. Chicago Bulls Betting Tips:

I’ve looked at this line a million ways and I just can’t figure it out. Why is it so low? Miami should dominate this team. Hassan Whiteside vs. Wendell Carter Jr. alone should get it done. I don’t get it. MIAMI ALL DAY.

Bet Miami -3
